Evolution Video

Congratulations to Krista Caldwell (Quest University Canada), winner of our VEF Evolution Video Contest!
Entitled "The Evolution of Everything," the winning video walks us through the molecular theory of evolution using simple and effective illustrations and narration:

Drawing from Darwin

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species, we asked for illustrations any of Charles Darwin’s writings. We received fantastic entries and had the difficult task of narrowing it down to three. All the entries were displayed at a celebration of the anniversary, and Greg Bole, as Charles Darwin, announced the judge's picks:

Barbara Gao and Angel Lu
Chapter VII - Scissor Beaks
Ink on paper

from: The Voyage of the Beagle - Chapter VII

Kaitlyn Hunter
The March of Life
Digital media

from: from: On the Origin of Species - 1959 Ed., pg 489

Rebeka Ryvola
Adventures of the HMS Beagle
Mixed media on paper

from: The Voyage of the Beagle

Thanks to everyone who participated. Visit the Beaty Museum's Darwin page to view video of Greg as Charles Darwin, and to read excerpts from Darwin's work.

Evolution Outreach Contest

BC teachers are eager to teach evolution to students from kindergarten to grade 12. But although the best teaching uses hands-on activities to introduce, clarify and reinforce concepts and relationships, few such activities have been developed. Use your creativity and knowledge of evolution to develop a fun, effective hands-on classroom activity.

Here are the winners of the Evolution Outreach Contest:

1st: Darwin’s Finches by Karl Heilbron and Andrew First

2nd: Acting Out Natural Selection by Crispin Jordan

3rd #1: Speciation and the Diversity of Species by Cameron Hopkins, Karl Heilbron, Andrew First, Spencer Jones, and Michael Inman.

3rd #2: Natural Selection Simulator, by Andrew First and Karl Heilbron

Thanks to all the entrants.
